The incidence of gastric cancer varies in different areas of the world. In regions with a high incidence, screening programs have been developed to detect cancer at an early, treatable state.
To determine the optimal frequency of gastric cancer screening, investigators in a tertiary teaching hospital in Korea retrospectively assessed the period from penultimate endoscopy to gastric cancer diagnosis in 846 patients. Histologic diagnoses included early gastric cancer (430 patients), advanced gastric cancer (219), and gastric adenoma (197 patients).
