To study the effect of botulinum toxin A on notalgia paresthetica that is resistant to topical therapy and more than mildly pruritic, researchers conducted a randomized, controlled, manufacturer-sponsored trial in which investigators were blinded to assignment. The 20 participants initially received either injected saline or reconstituted incobotulinum toxin. Toxin in a concentration of 50 units/mL was delivered in aliquots of 0.1 mL per 1 to 2 cm2 of hyperpigmented area or patient-indicated pruritic area. Pruritus was measured on a visual analog scale at 8 weeks and compared across groups.
