Nulliparity and young age are putative risk factors for expelling an intrauterine device (IUD), but data are inconsistent. In a secondary analysis from the contraceptive CHOICE project (a prospective cohort study of reversible contraception provided at no charge), researchers assessed rates of partial or complete IUD expulsion in relation to type of device and user age and parity.
Of the 5403 CHOICE participants who received an IUD, 2182 (40%) were nulliparous and 529 (10%) were teens (age range, 14–19). In the entire study population, 432 expulsions (10.2/100 IUD users) were reported during 36 months of follow-up.
