Since the first isolation of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), in California in 1962, the virus has been reported infrequently in the U.S. and has been associated only with small clusters of respiratory illness.
On August 19, 2014, the CDC was notified by a children's hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, of a relative increase in cases of severe respiratory illness (SRI), in some instances necessitating intensive care unit admission. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction testing of nasopharyngeal specimens obtained between August 5 and August 19 showed increased detection of rhinovirus/enterovirus.
