In the ADVANCE trial, 11,140 adults (age, ≥55) with longstanding type 2 diabetes were doubly randomized to (1) tight glycemic control (with a sulfonylurea-based regimen) or less-tight control, and (2) add-on antihypertensive treatment (with perindopril-indapamide) or placebo. Results were published after about 5 years of randomized treatment (NEJM JW Cardiol Oct 10 2007 and NEJM JW Cardiol Jun 6 2008). Now, the researchers report on roughly 5 years of posttrial follow-up (during which blood pressures and glycemic control became similar in intervention and control groups).
