Because statins have multiple effects on coagulation and inflammation, these agents might lower the well-known risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) associated with oral menopausal hormone therapy (HT). To further explore this possibility, U.K. investigators conducted a nested case-control study within a population-based cohort of postmenopausal women (age range, 50–79) identified through the U.K. General Practice Research Database. From the cohort of >955,000 eligible women, investigators identified 23,505 VTE cases during a mean follow-up of 6.7 years and matched them with 231,562 controls.
