Falls at home are a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in elders, but few studies have demonstrated that modifying the home environment can make it safer. In this study, 842 households (1848 occupants) in one region of New Zealand were randomized to undergo home modifications (e.g., outdoor and indoor hand rails, improved outside lighting, carpet edges fixed to the floor, bathroom grab rails, non-slip bathmats, and slip-resistant outdoor surfaces and steps) either immediately (treated homes) or 3 years later (controls).
