Narrowband imaging (NBI) has proven ineffective for improved detection of conventional colorectal adenomas using the Olympus 180 series colonoscopes. An initial study using the Olympus 190 series showed better detection of adenomas (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Jul 1 2014), and the effect of NBI on detection of serrated lesions remains largely unstudied.
Investigators from four tertiary referral institutions in the Netherlands performed a randomized crossover study of 52 patients with serrated polyposis undergoing surveillance. Patients underwent back-to-back colonoscopies performed using Olympus 180 series colonoscopes with white light and NBI in a randomized order.
