Outcomes of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB) are worse in hospitalized patients than in outpatients, but the factors contributing to this disparity are not well described. Using prospectively collected data from an audit of 208 hospitals in the U.K., investigators compared clinical factors, bleeding severity, and processes of care between 1107 inpatients and 5550 outpatients with AUGIB.
Inpatients were older and had more comorbidities and more severe bleeding than outpatients. The time to endoscopy and frequency of out-of-hours endoscopy were similar between groups.
