Up to 50% of the US population consumes herbal and dietary supplements (HDSs). Although HDSs are perceived as being safe, many cases of life-threatening hepatotoxicity have been reported. Furthermore, the current regulatory framework for HDSs is less stringent than for standard pharmaceuticals.
To compare the burden and characteristics of liver injury from HDSs with that from conventional medications, investigators evaluated consecutive patients in the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN) registry referred to a DILIN center between 2004 and 2013. HDSs were divided into bodybuilding and non-bodybuilding agents.
