The controversy regarding the role of sex steroids in cardiovascular disease continues. This study has addressed whether dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated form (DHEA-S) could predict major coronary heart disease (CHD) or cerebrovascular disease (CBVD) events in 2416 elderly men participating in the prospective, population-based Osteoporotic Fractures in Men study in Sweden (age range, 69–81).
Clinical outcomes data on the participants were obtained from national Swedish registries on hospital discharge and cause of death.
