Human adenovirus type 5 (rAd5) vectors have been extensively studied as vaccines against numerous pathogens. Such vaccines have been shown to confer protection against acute Ebola virus challenge. However, the use of human adenovirus vectors is restricted because of preexisting immunity to them. Adenoviruses isolated from nonhuman primates may overcome this limitation. In particular, chimpanzee adenoviruses (ChAds) have been found not to induce a human antibody response, and they have low worldwide seroprevalence.
