Improvements in antiretroviral therapy have greatly prolonged the survival of HIV-infected patients. This in turn has unmasked the effects of aging-associated comorbidities, including cerebrovascular disease. In a recent retrospective, single-center, case-control study conducted at a San Francisco HIV clinic, researchers investigated the association of ischemic stroke with ongoing HIV replication and CD4-cell count.
Sixty cases of first-ever ischemic stroke occurring between 2000 and 2012 were identified and validated.
