Target Population: Hematologists and oncologists
Platelet transfusions are prescribed to control ongoing bleeding or, in nonbleeding patients, to prevent hemorrhage. To guide decisions about the appropriate use of this therapy in adult patients, an expert committee of the AABB reviewed the relevant literature and developed these recommendations.
Transfusion with a single apheresis unit or a pool of four to six whole-blood–derived platelet concentrates is indicated for patients with therapy-induced platelet counts of ≤10×109/L.
