German investigators previously reported results from a project in which a “stroke emergency mobile unit” (STEMO) was deployed (NEJM JW Emerg Med Apr 22 2014). The STEMO is an ambulance that is equipped with a computed tomography scanner and staffed by a neurologist. In this substudy, the investigators compared the proportion of patients who received thrombolysis within 1 hour between patients who received STEMO and patients who received routine care.
Among 530 patients receiving thrombolysis, it was administered within 1 hour in 31% of STEMO patients versus 5% of routine-care patients. Mortality in the two groups was equivalent. Functional outcomes were not reported.
