In 2014, three long-awaited, randomized trials of treatment in patients with septic shock were released, and the third involved transfusion threshold in this population.
Two studies focused on the early resuscitation of patients with septic shock. In the PROCESS trial, 1341 patients with septic shock received one of three treatment strategies: early goal-directed therapy (EGDT) with specific targets for central venous pressure, central venous saturation, and hematocrit; protocol-based resuscitation with peripheral access only and slightly different hemodynamic targets; or usual care.
