Antibiotic Prophylaxis Before Colonoscopy: Updated Clinical Guideline

Background and Objective

Although incidence is rare, iatrogenic infection as a result of endoscopic procedures can occur due to bacteremia or disruption and contamination of tissue. The current guideline is an update to the 2008 ASGE guideline and provides several recommendations on periprocedural antibiotic prophylaxis for colonoscopy.

Key Recommendations

• For all cardiac conditions, antibiotic prophylaxis is not indicated solely to prevent infectious endocarditis.

• For synthetic vascular grafts and other nonvalvular cardiovascular devices, antibiotic prophylaxis is not recommended.
