Patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) require alternative anticoagulants to avoid new and recurrent thromboses. The anticoagulants currently approved for HIT (danaparoid and argatroban) must be given intravenously, and recipients must be closely monitored, delaying hospital discharge and greatly increasing the cost of treatment. Fondaparinux is a synthetic, heparin-like polysaccharide that is given subcutaneously and does not require patient monitoring.
