Children with chronic, serious illnesses consume the vast majority of health expenditures for children. To evaluate whether a comprehensive coordinated care (CC) model reduces illness and cost of care in this population, investigators at a university hospital conducted a randomized clinical trial to compare these outcomes in 96 children with serious illness and high risk of hospitalization receiving CC from university and private pediatricians and 105 comparably high-risk children receiving usual outpatient care (UC) from a limited number of providers and subspecialists in a university clinic.
