Opponents of efforts to legalize marijuana express concern that legalization will lead to increased use among adolescents. Results from the 2014 annual Monitoring the Future study (a survey of approximately 50,000 eighth-, tenth-, and twelfth-graders in 400 schools nationwide) provide important information about this concern.
From 2013 to 2014, lifetime, past-year, 30-day, and daily use of marijuana all decreased slightly among youth in all three grades. The only statistically significantly changes were a 2.5% decrease in past-year use and 0.6% decrease in daily use among tenth-graders.
