Open power morcellation, which uses a spinning blade to cut tissue into small pieces, has been widely utilized to remove large uterine tumors through small laparoscopic incisions. In this case report, three women with benign disease had a laparoscopic or robotic hysterectomy in which the uterus was power morcellated.
Within 1 year of the original surgery, all three women developed abdominal pain and underwent exploratory laparotomy, which revealed dissemination of benign uterine tissue throughout the abdomen. On final pathology, three separate cases of disseminated adenomyomatosis, endometriosis with inflammation, and leiomyomata were identified.
