As in vitro fertilization (IVF) becomes more common in the U.S., estimating the risks associated with assisted reproductive technology (ART) becomes more precise. Using National ART Surveillance System data that included 97% of cycles and 94% of ART clinics, CDC investigators calculated IVF complication rates associated with more than 1,135,000 autologous cycles and 112,000 donor cycles from 2000 through 2011.
Rates of any complication were 131.8 and 27.3 per 10,000 autologous and donor cycles, respectively. The most common complication was ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), occurring at rates of 121.2 and 22.0 per 10,000 autologous and donor cycles, respectively.
