Binge-eating disorder (BED), now recognized as a distinct eating disorder in DSM-5, occurs in 2% to 3% of community populations, in an estimated 20% of patients seeking medical treatment for obesity, and in ≥50% of patients seeking bariatric surgery. These patients have high rates of mood disorders and obesity-related medical comorbidities. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the gold standard for treating BED, which usually needs to be addressed before initiating behavioral management for obesity.
