The major hair loss of alopecia areata (AA) negatively affects quality of life. It is believed to be immunologically mediated, and various agents that modulate the immune or inflammatory systems have been demonstrated to improve hair regrowth. Recently, JAK kinase inhibition and a tumor necrosis antagonist have been demonstrated to benefit patients with extensive disease.
Two case reports prompted prospective investigation of 24 weeks of daily 40 mg/10 mg simvastatin/ezetimibe in 29 AA patients with disease duration >1 year and 40% to 70% involvement.
