Background: Meningococcal vaccines in current use contain the capsular polysaccharides of serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135. Producing a vaccine for serogroup B has proven difficult, because the B capsule in not immunogenic in humans. Since this serogroup is responsible for a large proportion of meningococcal infections in infants — and up to 90% of meningococcal disease cases overall in some European countries — the inability to protect against it has significantly impeded progress in eliminating meningococcal disease.
