A statement by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society advocates mandating antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) to improve outcomes in infection treatment and to minimize resistance development. Core strategies and structural elements of such programs are outlined in the statement; which elements are most effective remains less clear.
