With the legal landscape of marijuana changing and insight into the effects of the drug on young people evolving, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated recommendations regarding marijuana use among youth. Highlights are as follows:
Given the negative effects of marijuana on the health and brain development of young people (21 and younger), the AAP opposes marijuana use and any effort to legalize use in this age group.
In states that have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes, the AAP recommends strict enforcement of regulations that limit access to and marketing of marijuana to young people and strict penalties for those selling to young people.
