Hepatic dysfunction affects the function of other organs and can cause a coagulopathy. Nonvariceal peptic ulcer disease is a common complication in patients with liver disease.
To assess the impact of liver disease on 90-day mortality in patients with peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB), investigators identified a cohort of 21,359 patients hospitalized with PUB from 2004 through 2011 using the Danish National Registry of Patients. Outcomes were compared between 653 patients with cirrhosis (3.1%), 474 patients with noncirrhotic chronic liver disease (2.2%), and patients without chronic liver disease. Patients with acute viral hepatitis were excluded.
