The reported prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal injuries among endoscopists is high and varies widely (range, 37% to 89%). However, previous studies are limited by small sample sizes and lack of covariate risk analysis.
To further explore this issue, investigators administered a 25-question survey instrument via e-mail to 5239 endoscopists in the U.S. The instrument included items on type and volume of endoscopic workload, experience level, and type of injuries incurred during endoscopic procedures.
Results were as follows:
Among 684 respondents (response rate, 13%), 53% reported an injury in the back, neck, or upper or lower limb that was either definitely (30%) or possibly (23%) related to endoscopy.
