Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is a vasculitis typically associated with the deposition of IgA in the vessels. It is a tetrad, involving purpura of the skin, arthritis, gastrointestinal involvement, and nephritis. Some patients have long-term consequences, including the potential for renal failure. HSP is more common in children than adults. Findings in familial cases and small studies have suggested that genetic predisposition might influence development of this vasculitis.
