As part of a renewed effort to identify compounds that may have beneficial effects on clinical disease progression in Parkinson disease, The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke sponsored a multicenter, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, randomized efficacy trial of creatine monohydrate. At 45 sites across the U.S. and Canada, 1741 participants were enrolled. The profile for the patients included a diagnosis of Parkinson disease within 5 years, and all were receiving dopaminergic therapy. The researchers randomized participants to receive either placebo or creatine monohydrate (10 g/day) for 5 years.
