Maternal obesity during pregnancy has many consequences for both mother and infant. The impact of bariatric surgery on pregnancy outcomes was investigated in a nationwide observational study of singleton births from 2006 through 2011 in Sweden. Women who had previously undergone bariatric surgery were matched with multiple control women without histories of such surgery. Matching for body-mass index (BMI) used the presurgery BMI in the bariatric group and the BMI at the first prenatal visit in the control group. Matching was also performed for factors such as age, parity, and smoking history. Among women in the bariatric group, 98% had gastric bypass and 2% had gastric banding or another procedure.
