Although prolonged exposure to traumatic events features prominently among evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), other psychotherapies may also be helpful. Because PTSD is often generated by important interpersonal events and triggers and has significant interpersonal consequences, researchers examined the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT).
The investigators randomized 110 unmedicated patients with long-term PTSD of at least moderate severity (mean age, 40; female, 70%; married or cohabitating, 16%) to 14 weeks of IPT (focusing primarily on emotional and interpersonal aftermaths of traumas), prolonged exposure therapy (imaginal and in vivo exposures) or relaxation therapy (active control).
