To gain insight into the neurobiological validity of the current symptom-based diagnostic system in psychiatry, investigators conducted a meta-analysis of 193 studies that used voxel-based morphometry to measure brain gray matter.
The studies involved 7381 psychiatric patients and 8511 healthy controls. Diagnosis groups were psychosis (schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, and schizoaffective disorder), bipolar disorder (primarily nonpsychotic), depression, substance use disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders. Functional connectivity of the identified brain regions was analyzed in other study data on 99 healthy controls.
