Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic valve infectious endocarditis (SA-PVIE) has a mortality rate of 40% to 80%. Several reports have suggested reduced in-hospital mortality among individuals who undergo early valve replacement surgery (EVS), prompting some authors to recommend EVS for all patients with SA-PVIE. However, other investigators believe that decisions regarding EVS should be made on a case-by-case basis.
In an attempt to rectify this discrepancy, researchers analyzed data from a prospective, multicenter, multinational cohort of patients with infective endocarditis treated between 2000 and 2006. A total of 168 patients with left-sided SA-PVIE were identified; 74 of them underwent EVS.
