Myomectomy (surgical removal of uterine smooth muscle tumors) is an important treatment option for women who desire subsequent fertility; however, this procedure is contraindicated in women with uterine cancer, because incising the uterus can spread and upstage the cancer. In most cases, performing a myomectomy on a woman with an occult uterine cancer necessitates a second operation to appropriately stage the malignancy as soon as possible after the initial operation. Investigators examined risk for diagnosis of an occult uterine cancer at the time of myomectomy using the Perspective database, which contains information on 41,777 myomectomies performed at 496 U.S. hospitals from 2006 through 2012.
