Ovarian masses are rare in children, but recognizing characteristics associated with malignancy — and minimizing unnecessary oophorectomy — are nonetheless important. In a single-center Dutch retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed management of adnexal masses diagnosed between 1999 and 2013 in 111 girls (age range, 0–17 years; mean age, 10.2 years; 52% premenarchal).
Abdominal pain prompted initial evaluation in 60% of cases. Nonneoplastic benign masses (most commonly simple and paratubal cysts) accounted for 40% of masses.
