On February 25, 2015, the FDA announced approval of ceftazidime-avibactam (Avycaz) for two indications in adult patients: complicated urinary tract infections and — used in combination with metronidazole — complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs). Approval was based on previous experience with ceftazidime, in vitro and animal data on avibactam, and two phase II studies with the combination.
Adverse reactions include gastrointestinal effects and anxiety. In a phase III study, mortality was higher for ceftazidime-avibactam/metronidazole than for meropenem in a subset of patients with cIAIs and renal impairment; however, the dose of ceftazidime-avibactam was 33% lower than what is currently recommended in this situation.
