Suicide is the second leading cause of death among persons aged 10–24 years. To examine recent suicide trends in this age group, investigators from the CDC reviewed data from the National Vital Statistics System from 1994 to 2012.
Trends during that period were as follows:
Suicide rates remained consistently higher among males than females, but differences narrowed; the male-to-female suicide rate ratio decreased from 5.8 in 1994 to 3.7 in 2012.
Among males, age-adjusted suicide rates decreased significantly from 1994–2007 (annual percentage change from 1994–1999, −5.7; APC from 1999–2007, −1.2) but then increased significantly from 2007–2012 (APC, 2.4).
