Electronic Decision Support Benefits Asthma Care

Use of an EHR portal providing decision support for families of children with severe asthma was associated with fewer emergency department and office visits for asthma.

Emerging electronic health record (EHR) technology offers promise for better management of chronic conditions. MyAsthma is an EHR-linked patient portal that tracks parent's concerns, children's asthma control, and school and work attendance, and provides decision support for parents and clinicians. In a 6-month trial at three primary care practices, researchers compared outcomes between families of patients aged 6 to 12 years with chronic asthma who were randomized to MyAsthma or standard asthma care. A total of 53 families completed the trial.
