A recent study (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Apr 2015 and MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2015; 64:201) documented increasing suicide rates among girls compared with boys. In a new study, investigators examined whether suicide rates among youth (ages 10 to 24 years) differed by rural versus urban residence from 1996 to 2010. They used data from the National Vital Statistics System in combination with a Department of Agriculture method that characterizes U.S. counties as more urban or rural based on population and adjacency to metropolitan areas.
