Hyperuricemia is a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), but association of actual gout attacks with CVD is controversial. Because gout comprises not only acute attacks but also nonacute crystal deposition, persistent inflammation could potentiate CVD. In this retrospective case-control study, researchers used a U.K. primary care database to investigate the association between gout and CVD. They identified 8386 patients with gout (age, ≥50) and matched each case to five controls without gout by age (all patients were older than 50) and sex. Patients with prior CVD were excluded.
