Elevated Risk for Extracolonic Cancers in Serrated Polyposis

Serrated polyposis is the most common colorectal polyp syndrome and is associated with an increased risk for colorectal cancer. To estimate that risk and the risk for extracolonic cancers in this population, researchers compared cancer incidence between patients enrolled in a polyposis registry and the general U.S. population.

Of 64 patients with serrated polyposis from 62 pedigrees, 6 (9%) developed colorectal cancer, and 6 others had advanced adenomas. Ten patients (16%) developed extracolonic cancers, including three cases of breast cancer, two of prostate cancer, one of Hodgkin lymphoma, and one each of ovarian, ureter, cervix, and basal cell carcinoma.
