Cardiovascular mortality is increasing around the world. Investigators from the Global Burden of Disease Study sought to illuminate the principal causes. Using mortality data from 188 countries, they investigated demographic and epidemiologic factors underlying regional changes in cardiovascular mortality.
From 1990 to 2013, worldwide deaths from cardiovascular disease increased by 41%. The increase was largely a result of the aging of populations and the growth of populations. Ischemic heart disease was the leading contributor to the increase in cardiovascular deaths. Meanwhile, age-specific cardiovascular death rates dropped markedly, with an overall decline of 39%.
