Autoimmune gastritis leads to oxyntic gastric atrophy (OGA), a risk factor for gastric cancer. Autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) has been associated with other autoimmune disorders, including gastritis. To better understand the relationship between autoimmune gastritis and ATD, investigators in Germany compared the prevalence of OGA in 34 patients with documented ATD and 30 control patients with goiter.
Serum pepsinogen I and II levels were obtained to identify OGA, defined as a pepsinogen I level ≤25 ng/mL or a pepsinogen I/II ratio ≤3. Patients with positive test results underwent endoscopy to confirm the histologic diagnosis and determine the extent of the disease.
