Injection of botulinum toxin A into the pylorus and/or antrum has been used experimentally to help obese patients lose weight. The presumed action is to decrease gastric emptying and increase satiety. To evaluate the efficacy of this approach, investigators performed a meta-analysis of 7 studies involving a total of 115 obese patients, 79 of whom received botulinum toxin injection for weight loss. All studies included pre- and post-treatment body weight data. Four involved a placebo-injected group for comparison.
