Emerging evidence suggests that statins cause diabetes in a small percentage of treated patients. In this population-based cohort study, researchers sought to expand our understanding of this association. The cohort consisted of 8749 randomly selected men (age range, 45–73) without diabetes who resided in one city in Finland; 25% were taking a statin at baseline.
During 6 years of follow-up, men who took statins (including those who started statin therapy during the study) were significantly more likely to develop diabetes than those who did not take statins (11.2% vs. 5.8%).
