Misoprostol is an effective treatment for incomplete abortion. However, because worldwide access to this agent is limited, hemorrhage and sepsis remain major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in many low-resource settings. To investigate whether postabortion care provided by midwives is equivalent to physician care, researchers in central Uganda conducted a trial involving 1010 women who required treatment for incomplete first-trimester abortions (resulting from either unsafe or spontaneous abortion and identified by symptoms and self-reported last menstrual period).
