Several recombinant viral vaccines are currently going through clinical trials in response to the ongoing Ebola epidemic. In six phase I trials (detailed in two preliminary reports), researchers examined the safety and immunogenicity of a candidate Ebola vaccine that is based on a replication-competent recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV).
Regules and colleagues describe two randomized, double-blind, dose-escalation trials conducted in the U.S. Each trial involved 26 healthy adult volunteers, of whom 6 received placebo and 20 received the recombinant vaccine at a dose of either 3 million or 20 million plaque-forming units (PFUs).
