Hypertension and cognitive impairment coexist commonly, but the relations among hypertension, hypertension treatment, and cognitive decline are unclear. In this prospective cohort study from Italy, 172 older adults (mean age, 79; 68% with dementia; 32% with mild cognitive impairment) were assessed at baseline for cardiovascular and other chronic diseases, antihypertensive medications, office blood pressure (BP), cognitive function (based on Mini-Mental State Exam [MMSE] score; score range, 0–30), and daily living function; they also underwent ambulatory BP monitoring. Mean MMSE score at baseline was 22.1; 70% of participants were taking antihypertensive medications.
